Christmas messages for your partner, built on one detail only you two know

A red envelope closed with a wax seal on a wooden table, next to other seals

It's 11:40 on Christmas Eve. You're in your childhood bedroom under a quilt that smells like the hall closet, and they're four states away in theirs. You type Merry Christmas babe, love you so much and look at it for a while.

It's what you texted your sister an hour ago, minus the babe.

The feeling is there. What's missing is a detail, and after a year together you have plenty of those.

What makes a Christmas message for your partner sound like you wrote it

Three things, none of which require being a writer.

  1. One detail from this year that only the two of you know. The coffee order, the wrong exit on the way to the lake, the show you swore you'd hate. Small beats grand.
  2. Write about the person, not the holiday. Joy, peace and warmth describe December. The message is for whoever is reading it.
  3. End with something you'll do. A plan for January lands harder than a wish for the whole year.

Here's a quick test. If the message would work for someone else's boyfriend with only the name changed, it still needs the detail.

A good message is one you couldn't forward to anyone else.

20 Christmas messages for a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife

These were written for this article, and almost none of them are gendered, so they work for whoever you're with. Each one carries a sample detail. Swap in your own.

Short ones, for midnight or first thing Christmas morning

  • Merry Christmas. Of everything this year handed me, you're the part I'd ask for again.
  • First text of Christmas goes to you. So will the last one tonight.
  • Merry Christmas to the person who warms up the car for me and acts like it's nothing.
  • I got what I wanted back in March, when you said yes to a second date. Everything under the tree is extra.

For your first Christmas together

  • This time last year I was telling my friends I was done with dating apps. Glad I gave it one more week. Merry first Christmas.
  • I still don't know if your family opens presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. I'd like to find out every year.
  • I wrapped your gift three times because the first two looked like I didn't care. I care. Merry Christmas.

For a Christmas spent apart

  • You're three time zones behind me, so I'll say it twice: once at my midnight and once at yours. Merry Christmas.
  • I set out your mug this morning out of habit. It's staying next to mine until you're back.
  • Everyone here keeps asking about you, which means I get to talk about you all day. Call you after dinner.

A text only covers so much of the day. There's more in this piece on a long-distance Christmas.

Funny ones, for couples who tease each other

  • Merry Christmas to the person who says "five more minutes" and means forty. I'd wait longer.
  • My gift to you is saying nothing about how you load the dishwasher. Offer expires at noon tomorrow. I love you.
  • I asked for someone who'd laugh at my jokes. I got someone who finishes them wrong. Keeping you anyway.

For a husband or wife, many Christmases in

  • Twelve Decembers and you still buy the tree that's too tall for the ceiling. I still hold the ladder. Merry Christmas, love.
  • You stayed up until one putting a bike together with a butter knife so I could sleep. I noticed. Merry Christmas.
  • We don't say it as often as we used to, so here it is in writing: I'd pick you again.

After a rough year

  • This year took a lot out of both of us, and I won't pretend it didn't. You showed up anyway, every week. Next year I'm asking for boring. Boring, with you.
  • No big wishes this Christmas. One small one: that January finds us rested and on the same side.

For the tag on the gift

  • Open this one last. I picked it the week you said you never buy anything for yourself. Merry Christmas.
  • The wrapping is my best effort. So is everything else this year, and you've been kind about both.

If the tag is written and the gift isn't picked yet, there's a guide to a Christmas gift for your girlfriend and one to a Christmas gift for your boyfriend.

How to make one yours in two minutes

Pick the one that sounds like the two of you and change only the detail. The mug becomes the hoodie they left at your place. Twelve Decembers becomes however many you've had. The dishwasher becomes the thermostat.

If no detail comes to mind, don't try to remember one. Scroll your camera roll to any month this year, or search your text thread for a word only the two of you use. It's all there, with dates.

Think about where it'll be read, too. On Christmas morning their phone is buzzing with the family group chat and a cousin's forty photos. A message sent late on Christmas Eve, or once the wrapping paper is cleared, gets more room. And a tag on a gift opened in front of the whole family will be read out loud by somebody's uncle. Keep the private line for the text.

For everyone else on your list, this piece covers what to write in a Christmas card. And for the other midnight that week, here are New Year messages for someone you love.

When a text isn't enough room

Sometimes you start two lines and find yourself on the fifth memory. That's a letter, and it's worth doing properly: see what to write in a love letter.

And sometimes every memory has a photo attached. That's what Eternal Gift is for. You build a page online with your photos, a message or a letter, a song and stickers, and you send it as a link or a QR code. The midnight text stays in the thread. The page holds the rest of the year.
