Secret Santa note ideas: what to write on the tag, in the clues, and at the reveal

10/24/2026 · 8 min read · Eternal Gift

A gift wrapped in brown paper with a blank tag tied on with twine

The email arrived the Monday after Thanksgiving: You've drawn Priya from Accounts Payable. You have spoken to Priya twice, both times about a missing invoice. Three weeks later the gift is wrapped, it's sitting in your tote bag under your desk, and the tag reads To: Priya. From: your Secret Santa. There is a lot of blank tag left.

The gift was the easy part. A Secret Santa also asks for words: a note on the tag, maybe a few clues during the week, and one sentence at the reveal while the whole break room watches.

Below are notes for each of those moments, plus a set for the name you barely know.

The one rule for tags, clues and reveals

One rule covers most of it: mention something you've actually seen them do. A habit, a mug, the time they get in, the thing they always say on calls. "Hope you have a wonderful holiday" could go to anyone in the building. "For the person who refills the printer paper before it runs out" goes to one.

The other half of the rule is the audience. Tags get read out loud and reveals happen in front of everyone. Joke about what they do, not what they are. Looks, age, salary and dating life stay out of it. If you paused before writing it, skip it.

Still need the gift itself? Start with these Secret Santa gift ideas and come back.

Secret Santa note ideas for the gift tag

The tag is the only part they take home with the present. Two or three sentences is plenty. Swap in the details of the person you drew.

  • I drew your name and thought of the plant on your windowsill, the one the whole floor waters when you're out. This is for the two of you. Happy holidays.
  • You fixed my slides ten minutes before the October meeting and never brought it up again. I'm bringing it up. Thank you, and happy holidays.
  • For the person who brings the good snacks to the 4 p.m. meeting and makes it survivable: enjoy every day of your time off.
  • You always know which conference room is actually free. I trust your judgment more than the calendar. Hope I judged this gift half as well.
  • When there's barely room: Picked with you in mind. You'll find out who on Friday.

If you drew someone you're close to and want more than a tag's worth, the full method is in what to write in a Christmas card.

Secret Santa clues that keep them guessing

Some groups run the game all week, with small notes left on desks or dropped in the group chat before the big exchange. A good clue is true, small, and doesn't give you away on the first try. Start hard and get easier.

  • Clue one: we've shared an elevator more times than we've shared a conversation.
  • Your Secret Santa knows your coffee order and has never once bought you a coffee. That changes in January.
  • I sit close enough to hear your playlist. I have no complaints.
  • We were on the same losing trivia team this year. I blame the geography round.
  • Last clue: I'm the one pretending very hard not to watch you read this.

A rhyme works too, if that's your group's style:

  • I'm not at your desk and I'm not down the hall. I'm the voice that says "you're on mute" on the call.

Clues about the gift are fair game as long as they don't spoil it: how heavy it is, whether it rattles, which room of the house it will live in.

If the note would fit anyone in the room, it isn't about the person you drew yet.

What to say at the reveal

This one is spoken, not read. Aim for about twenty seconds: one description, the name, the handoff. Stretch the suspense any longer and people drift toward the cookie table.

  • My person keeps a drawer of spare chargers and has rescued every phone in this room at least once.
  • I drew the one who turns the thermostat up when she thinks nobody's looking. We're all looking, and we're all grateful.
  • My person brings the same green bean casserole every single year, and every year the dish goes home empty. Aunt Deb, this one's yours.
  • I'll keep it short because there's pie. My person has covered my desk during every dentist appointment I had this year, and I have bad teeth. Come get your present.
  • If you hate public speaking: Public speaking isn't my thing, so I'll just point. You. This one's yours.

What to write when you barely know them

It happens in every office and every big family: the name is the new hire, or your cousin's boyfriend. Don't fake a closeness that isn't there. Say the little you know, honestly, and wish them some rest. If you aren't sure what they celebrate, Happy holidays covers it.

  • We've mostly talked in the microwave line, but I've noticed you always let the soup people go first. That's character. Happy holidays.
  • I know two things about you: you bike in, even in December, and there's a photo of a very large dog on your desk. I shopped accordingly. Hope it works.
  • We're on different teams and the same floor. Consider this a gift and an introduction. I'm the one two rows over who waves.
  • I had no inside information, so I went with something I'd want myself. If I got it wrong, the gift receipt is taped to the bottom.

At the reveal, the same idea holds. I drew someone I'm hoping to actually work with next year is true, short, and puts nobody on the spot.

Four quick fixes before you write

"You're so great"

Replace it with one thing they did, and roughly when. A compliment with no fact attached fits the whole room.

"Hope you like it, it's not much"

Say why you picked it instead. An apology makes the gift smaller than it is.

A joke about looks or age

Trade it for a harmless habit they already laugh about. Remember the note gets read out loud.

Ten clues and a speech

Three clues and the name. Other people are waiting for their turn.

When you draw someone you actually love

In a family exchange or a friend group that's done this for years, the name you draw is sometimes your sister, your mom, or your oldest friend. Then the problem flips. You have too much to say and a tag is two inches wide. For the wording, these Christmas messages for friends can help you settle on a single story. And if the exchange is tomorrow and you're still short a gift, there's help in last-minute Christmas gifts.

For what doesn't fit on the tag, there's Eternal Gift. You build a page online with photos, a message or a letter, music and stickers, and they open it from a link or a QR code, which can travel with the gift tag. The Secret Santa gift stays the Secret Santa gift. The page holds the part you weren't going to say out loud, in front of everyone, with pie waiting.
